I am 36 yeards old and pregnant. Of course, I received books from everybody. Although well-intentioned, I wish the giver had read through the first few chapters. I know there are more risks associated with pregnancy as a woman ages. We all know it. I think all women worry about miscarriages, birth defects, and other horrible things that can happen. This book spends much to much time going into the detail of all the risks, and only a scant amount of time on the rewards. I wanted to be excited about my pregnancy, not terrified. I found this book to be negative and worrying, and not the least bit encouraging. I threw the book away after my eighth week. It was all that I could take. I suggest to all well-meaning gifters that you pass over this book and look for something more positive.

I did not particularly enjoy this book. I found it to be full of frightening “what-if’s.” I would reccomend it to anyone over 35 who is expecting their first baby as is contains a lot of info on the developing fetus etc…but I thought the overall tone was too doom-and -gloom for me.

A good, concise reference guide however, I would have liked to see more specific over 35 issues. The author has a compassionate, sensitive, emotional approach often lacking in other books on this topic, however her self-congratulatory, look at me, do as I say not as I do, alpha female overachiever stylings get tiring. We get it Dr. Shanahan youre an accomplished physician who graduated from top schools, worked obsessively throughout your pregnancy etc etc— but lets get back to the medicine thats why I bought the book; for guidance not to read the authors C.V.

My friend is 35 and pregnant, and I started reading this book while I was housesitting since I’m trying to get pregnant myself. I read the chapters about what to do before getting pregnant and looked at all the pictures of what the baby is doing at different stages. It is so interesting. I’ll definitley read this more closely when I do get pregnant, even though I’m only 29.
